February Being Heart Month

Posted by Brian Shevel on 27 February 2015

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), February 27, 2015 - Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is responding to February being dedicated to the global awareness of heart health.

"Despite most of the causes being preventable, cardiovascular disease is still the number one cause of death globally. It's amazing how many people continue to suffer every year with some form of cardiovascular disease," says Lester Fix, vice president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. "And because most of the causes are preventable, one can look at this two ways: it can be encouraging knowing that we have a chance to drastically reduce the numbers if we further educate the global population on the steps they can take, or it can be discouraging knowing that so many people are dying when they could already be doing things to prevent these risks."

Fix explains that smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity are leading causes of heart disease. In fact, just being physically inactive increases the chances of heart disease by 50%. High blood pressure and diabetes are also big risk factors, making regular checkups and 30 minutes of physical activity each day essential.

"We at Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region are doing our part to promote cardiac senior homecare by encouraging the seniors we work with to eat a healthy diet and live a healthier lifestyle, including daily physical activity," Fix concludes. "The goal is to give the seniors in our care the best resources for them to understand themselves and what is best for their heart."

About: I am originally from South Africa from a small city called Bloemfontein. After I completed my education, I went to work with my late-father who had a wholesale business selling clothes and shoes to retail stores around the country. I was in the business till I left for Canada in 1993. In Canada, I have run several businesses in a variety of industries. Although I experienced success, I missed helping people. I learned from my parents that helping seniors was important to their well-being and of great value to the community. Volunteer work remains a priority in my life. I am a past president of Bnai Brith and serve on many other committees.
