Eating fresh produce is an essential part of any diet. However, with winter upon us and the temperature dropping well below zero, getting fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown locally is difficult. Furthermore, the price of produce always goes up during the winter, making eating a balanced meal on a budget difficult.

This is also a great time of year to add jams, preserves, pickles, and hot sauces to your diet for variety and as a way to try out new tastes. Add some spice to your diet by growing an indoor herb garden as well: herbs such as parsley, sage, thyme, dill, and chive are all easy to grow in small pots on a windowsill.

And speaking of potatoes, there are other root vegetable options available to you during the winter, such as turnips, sweet potatoes, rutabagas, beets, daikon radishes, and celery root, all of which can be prepared in a variety of ways to give you a break from potatoes.

Though it may be colder outside, there are green vegetables that can be grown year-round in hot houses and may be prepared in a variety of ways to keep mealtime from getting too boring. We all need vitamin C and, surprisingly, citrus fruits are inexpensive during the winter - in fact, that's often when they are their tastiest and juiciest.

The cold even benefits some other fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. These vegetables are rich in antioxidants, but can leave your kitchen smelling bad if overcooked.

While fruits and vegetables are a recommend part of any diet, you may be limited by both supply and cost during the winter. However, there are other ways to get the necessary nutrition during the winter, such as protein.
