Ontario Receiving High Ratings from Seniors for Coordination

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), April 16, 2015 Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region (www.HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a survey showing Ontario receives high ratings from seniors for coordinating their health care.

A recent survey conducted by the Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of Older Adults showed that 82% of Ontario residents over the age of 55 are satisfied with the coordination of their health care and the communication between each of their health care providers.

The survey also showed that 90% of respondents knew exactly who to contact for questions or concerns once they were released from the hospital and 81% of respondents were provided with follow-up care from the hospital after a stay. "Eighty-two percent of the seniors surveyed saying they are happy with a service is very encouraging," says Lester Fix, vice president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. "The survey was conducted to get a gauge of how health care providers were communicating among themselves and with patients to successfully coordinate their health care between appointments or after a stay in the hospital."

Fix explains that these figures are on par or better than most provinces in Canada and compare with many international figures. However, there is still a need to analyze these results and find ways to improve these systems further.

"In addition, when it came to having seniors receiving written information on symptoms that should be monitored or general information on steps that should be taken once they've left the hospital, only about 75% of those surveyed said they had received that info, compared to many other countries coming in at about 90%," he notes. "What's even more crucial is being able to provide seniors with access to actual people who can give them answers to medical questions in-between doctor visits; right now, only about 63% of seniors surveyed feel they have this access."

"Communication is one of the key aspects to providing suitable care for seniors, in particular when they are leaving the hospital to return back home," Fix concludes. "Caregivers must know the precise condition of the patient, along with appointment dates, medications that need to be taken, and all other relevant information."
