Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region Reacts to New Study Claiming Depression Raises the Risk of Dementia
Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), August 8, 2014 – Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a recent study that claims depression can increase the risk of getting dementia.
In a study published by the American Academy of Neurology, lead author Robert S. Wilson stated it was previously thought that “depression was perhaps an early sign of the development of dementia and not a true risk factor.” Dr. Wilson pointed at the length of time it takes for the onset of dementia as the basis for this theory, but admits that the results of this study would indicate that depression is actually a cause. ”It was also thought that both depression and dementia were caused by the same brain abnormality, which this study suggests is also incorrect,” says Lester Fix, executive vice president of Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region. “This study showed that depression actually decreased in some patients after the development of dementia, so the theory of sharing the same brain abnormality is no longer sound.”
Fix observes that of considerable note in the study is that many of the test patients only showed mild symptoms of depression, yet they were still more likely to suffer from cognitive decline.
“If mild depression still has an impact on the frequency of dementia, then there needs to be a focus on ways to improve quality of life throughout our lifetime,” he concludes. “At Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region, we do just that by improving the lives of seniors through our homecare services. The overwhelming majority of seniors prefer to receive elder care services in their home and we will continue to facilitate those seniors.”
