Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region Weighs In on Study That Shows Vitamin D May Help Battle Alzheimer’s

According to research recently published online in JAMA Neurology, there is a correlation between higher vitamin D levels, increased cognitive function, and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s. The study took place from 2002 to 2010 and included 382 seniors over the age of 60. Participants had their vitamin D levels measured yearly. “When close to 50 million people around the world are known to be living with Alzheimer’s, something needs to be done,” says Brian Shevel, President of Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region. “The research efforts into Alzheimer’s have been significant. The medical community understands the damage this disease is causing every day and are pushing themselves to find better treatments and ultimately a cure.”
Study results are encouraging, according to Shevel. For one, participants with lower vitamin D levels scored lower on cognitive tests that focused on memory and reasoning. However, cognitive function levels increased in participants who began the study with lower vitamin D levels. Study researchers suggest that vitamin D can protect the brain and possibly even help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s.
“These findings led researchers to believe that seniors with lower vitamin D levels are more susceptible to Alzheimer’s,” concludes Shevel, who notes that caregivers at Home Care Assistance Toronto/York region are trained to work with seniors with Alzheimer’s. “The simplest and most natural way to get more vitamin D is by sunlight. But a healthy diet is another way to get enough of this protective vitamin into your system.”
