Raising Awareness of COPD on November 19
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a respiratory ailment that many seniors face. November 19 is World COPD Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness surrounding the disease. As the top provider of home care services in Toronto the GTA, Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region works year-round to offer the best care for clients with COPD.
World COPD Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). Working with health care professionals and COPD awareness groups around the world, GOLD draws attention to some of the issues patients with COPD face, as well as works towards improving care. As a provider of elderly care in Newmarket and the surrounding regions, we provide our clients with COPD with a number of valuable resources. For a list of World COPD Day events in your area, see the link at the bottom of the page.
Since it was started in 2002, World COPD Day has grown to include 50 countries. On this day, GOLD and organizations around the world take steps to show patients with COPD how they can improve their health before and after a diagnosis of COPD. As a provider of a home health care service for clients with a number of ailments, we have workers who specialize in caring for patients with COPD.
COPD affects the lungs in a number of ways. The air sacs in the lung are no longer able to stretch, leading to shortness of breath; the walls of the air sacks are destroyed; and the walls of the airways are inflamed, thickened, and clogged with mucus. Some of the symptoms include chronic coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Patients with COPD may also suffer from frequent lung infections and weight loss. If your loved one is suffering from any of these symptoms, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment with their physician.
If an elderly parent or loved one is currently experiencing only shortness of breath, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment with their doctor; if diagnosed early, your loved one can still live an active and happy life. As a provider of home care services in Toronto, we know that COPD is a problem that commonly affects the elderly and our workers can help your loved ones get around, as well as provide exercise tips that will keep them fit without putting a strain on their lungs.
One of the most common causes of COPD is smoking, which is why quitting is vitally important. The two most common forms of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and many COPD patients suffer from a combination of both.
While COPD is a progressive disease, there are steps that you can take to ease symptoms, especially if it is diagnosed early. As a provider of elderly care in Newmarket, our workers will assist your loved one following a diagnosis of COPD. Contact Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region for more information.
